Review: Tunnel of Bones by Victoria Schwab

Hey all, Dani here.

I guess I’m just going to keep talking about spirits and ghosts, lol. Yesterday was a manga about spirits, and today is a Middle Grade book about a girl who can see ghosts. I mean, I guess this is the perfect time of year for the spooky stuff, so yay. I love Halloween time, so this is absolutely one of my favorite times of year.

Anyway, let’s just go ahead and jump into today’s book review.

Summary

Trouble is haunting Cassidy Blake . . . even more than usual.

She (plus her ghost best friend, Jacob, of course) are in Paris, where Cass’s parents are filming their TV show about the world’s most haunted cities. Sure, it’s fun eating croissants and seeing the Eiffel Tower, but there’s true ghostly danger lurking beneath Paris, in the creepy underground Catacombs.

When Cass accidentally awakens a frighteningly strong spirit, she must rely on her still-growing skills as a ghosthunter — and turn to friends both old and new to help her unravel a mystery. But time is running out, and the spirit is only growing stronger.

And if Cass fails, the force she’s unleashed could haunt the city forever.

My Thoughts

Rating: 4.5 stars

I definitely prefer Victoria V.E. Schwab’s YA and adult books to her Middle Grade, but I still think they are all really good.

So, this one picks up right where the first one left off. It was cool to see Cass travel to a new city armed with everything she learned so far. Though it is also clear that there is a whole lot more she still needs to learn.

All in all I think that Edinburgh had better atmosphere but Paris brought a better plot overall. Honestly I really am hoping that this series will span Cass’s whole trip with her parents, because I’m sure there will be a cool development arc to come from everything that is learned from each stop of the journey to film this ghost show.

We definitely saw some interesting developments with both Cass and Jacob.

Oh, and the poltergeist mystery was pretty awesome too.

I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more from Schwab in the future.
