What I’m Reading (52)

Welcome to the last What I’m Reading post. Now you may be asking why that is, because this actually has been a pretty popular series here on my blog. Well, don’t panic. The truth is that I’m actually just going to be changing this post up a little bit. Starting with the title: I now plan to call this post series my Weekly Wrap-Up. Also, not only will I be discussing what books I’ve finished, what ones I’m currently reading, and what ones I hope to read soon, but I’ll also be talking about what we’ve watched recently, and what games (tabletop or video game) we’ve been playing. Oh, and how my writing is going. So you can look forward to the first Weekly Wrap-Up post next Wednesday.

I have so many books to look forward to over the next couple of months. Through NetGalley, I have been approved for several digital advanced copies, and I cannot wait to read them and then share my thoughts with everyone. Of course I’m also trying to balance them with some of my overdue NetGalley reviews as well, so I hope that I can get my reading schedule adjusted so I can review these upcoming books by their release days. As a sneak peek, some of the books I’ll be reading include: No Country for Old Gnomes by Kevin Hearne and Delilah S Dawson, The Missing of Clairdelune by Christelle Dabos, Dark Shores by Danielle L Jensen, The Living God by Kaytalin Platt, Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, and House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A Craig.

All right, let’s just jump into what I’ve read since my last post.

I have finally read Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor. I have been holding off on reading this book for so long. To be perfectly honest, when I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone…I didn’t really like it that much. But I wanted to give Laini Taylor another try, and everything I had heard about her newest books made me intrigued. So I finally got over myself and started reading. And I enjoyed it. This might actually help me to actually pick up the aforementioned “meh” book and give it another try, just in case I was simply in the wrong reader headspace for it.

I also managed to get a decent chunk of the way through Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett. Actually, depending on how work went today, I may have finished it before this post goes live. That’s actually why I already put it in my finished reads category. I have high hopes that I’ll get some decent reading time in at work. If not then I’ll finish the book a couple hours after the post goes live. Either way, it counts as a finished book, right?

Okay, now as to what I’m currently reading…that would be The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, and The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell. Both of these are books that I have been meaning to read for a couple years now, and I’m finally making time for them. These reading challenge themes have been rather helpful for me so far. I feel like I’m actually making progress on my TBR, and that is great.

Finally, I suppose it is time to talk about what I’m hoping to start reading in the next week. Well, see, the next round of the Manga Madness Readathon will be starting this weekend, so I’ll definitely be reading a lot of manga next week. But, before the readathon starts, I’d like to read some more fantasy books, and I may restrict the manga to at home reading, and continue to take the novels with me as my work reads.

Anyway, I’d like to finally get around to To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo, and The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. And I’ve even decided what books I’d like to read should I finish these two…but I think I’ll hold off on announcing them just yet. I’d rather not get too far ahead of myself.

In other news, I’m doing pretty decently so far with restricting myself from buying all of the books I’d like to add to my library. We’re trying to save up money for appliances and furniture for when we get our house and move in. But, I did just buy five books yesterday, and three of them were on my approved list of books I can buy. The other two are because I couldn’t resist. It’s totally fine though, because this is the only book buying I’m doing in February.
