Hey all, Dani here.
As promised, I am back with a review of the second book in The Monster of Selkirk series, because, honestly, I can’t stop thinking about this series. It is slightly driving me crazy that I can’t really spend money on books right now because of needing to save up money for house necessities and all that. I really want to get the third book of this series so I can keep reading.
Summary
Tallis is learning how to deal with loss and violence as she and her friends traverse the forests of Selkirk trying to find the reason behind the elven uprising. Not to mention why they keep hissing her name. But the further into the forests they go, Tallis is finding that the elves’ depravity can still surprise her, and thoroughly test the bonds of friendship, family, and love.
Tallis’s journey eventually leads to answers they’re not prepared for. Now Tallis begins to wonder just who she really is, and if she’s the evil that will end up destroying Selkirk. But she cannot stop to process these revelations, as an unforeseen betrayal lands those she loves at the feet of the very monster responsible for all the hurt, and heartbreak.
Coming face to face with her foe, Tallis discovers all too late she has no idea how to deal with this level of pain, and death. One way or another, the monster’s path ends here, and all Tallis can hope to do is bring those she loves safely out of the heart of the forest.
My Thoughts
Rating: 5 stars
Okay, so I picked this one up as a read during the 24 Hour Readathon I hosted at the end of January. Based on my experience with the first book, I knew I would get sucked into the story, and that I would likely read it quickly…which is great when you’re doing a readathon.
It pretty much picks up right where we left off in the first book, and a lot of the story once again has Tallis and her friends traveling to find answers to why the elves have been rising up, and why they are hissing Tallis’s name. As I said in my review of the first installment, I did figure out why Tallis was so special–or part of it anyway–before it was properly revealed, but it didn’t make the story less entertaining for me.
No, instead with all of the travel and character interaction, as well as the intrigue and the action, I was just consumed by this story. The descriptions are great, and honestly reading this book just makes me think of some of the fantasy adventures and treks I’ve gone on in various D&D campaigns. It definitely has a similar feel to me.
But oh man, the twists and turns this story takes. It leads to a few moments where I admit that I was so totally emotionally invested in the story that I felt the betrayals and heartbreak as readily as our core group of characters.
I am thoroughly impressed with this series so far, and I am so grateful for Kathy from Books and Munches for introducing me to this series.
