Weekend Writer: Introduction

Hey all, Dani here.

In all honestly the Writer’s Symposium at Gen Con had the opposite effect I was hoping for. There were a few interesting things I learned, and it was cool to meet authors who either work as a writer full time or who have a day job and then write on the side. However, a lot of the information they gave just made me doubt myself and my ability to write regularly.

Since writing is something I want to do, I’m going to try to do something to help keep me focused on the craft of writing. Each Sunday I want to share some writing tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years. This could mean sharing my notes from a Writer’s Symposium panel from 2019’s Gen Con. It could mean sharing details from a chapter in a book on writing or from an essay on writing. And occasionally this could mean me sharing a little bit of my writing.

Here’s just some of the books I’ll be going through (or going through again) during the course of this Weekend Writer series. I do believe I’ve talked about some of my favorite books on writing in the past, but it has been a few years. Literally that linked post is from March 2016, shortly after I started this blog.

It will be nice to revisit some of my old writing craft books, as well as delve more into some newer books. So if you know of any other books on the craft of writing you would recommend, feel free to let me know.

I hope this series on my blog will help some of you in your own pursuit of writing, or that you at least enjoy my insights and process as I try and get myself back into the habit of studying and practicing creative writing.

  1. I attended a writing convention once and at the end of the day I also left feeling kind of discouraged, or maybe overwhelmed. I actually haven’t done any creative writing in a while, so I’m looking forward to reading your Weekend Writer posts!

    1. I’ve had two emotional breakdowns where Damian had to just hold me and comfort me, because of how I’m feeling about my writing dreams now. It hasn’t been fun. This is my solution to hopefully counter that.

I’m glad you’re looking forward to reading this blog series. Maybe it’ll help you get back to creative writing too. 🙂
