Hey all, Sam and David here.
Sorry this post is up so late today. We’ve been on the road most of the day, heading from Iowa to Ohio for Fan Expo Cleveland this weekend. It was so hard to get out the door today. I really didn’t want to leave since Luna is still missing, and it’s supposed to rain pretty much the rest of the week. I’ve posted on all the local social media groups, we’ve talked to our neighbors, and we have some friends going over to the house to see if she shows up. We built a little shelter/home base on the porch for her, complete with a couple of blankets that she loves laying on. I’m really hoping she finds her way home, and soon. She is not an outdoor cat…and she’s my baby.
But we made promises to be at the convention. We would have stayed home one more day, but I had already booked a hotel for tonight so we wouldn’t have to travel the whole 10 hours in one day, and I was past the free cancellation period, so if we had stayed home I still would have been charged for the hotel stay.
Be sure to follow our social media accounts (@SamRushingBooks and @freestateofgeek) over the weekend. We’ll be sharing some behind the scenes convention photos as well as cool things we see around the con, like cool fellow artists and vendors and cool cosplays.
Okay, let’s talk about what we were up to in the past week…before our cat sneaked out late Monday night.

Okay, so yeah, it was a pretty darn good reading week, at least for finishing books that I had been working on off and on for a little while now. That’s how it’s been with my attempts to snap out of my reading slump. I’ll try a book, be doing a good job reading it, and then just set it aside, and then it takes a while to pick it up again. I’m not saying that any of the books I’ve put aside are bad, because they’re not, but my reading mood has been difficult to predict.
But I think I’m pulling out of it. I’m at least consistently reading. And the books I’m reading, I’m also trying to get them reviewed pretty quickly. That’s something pretty good. If I keep up this pace, I just might get close to the recommended 80% review percentage on NetGalley.
Watching: So…last week I forgot to add that we watched “A Knight’s Tale,” and that I watched “Burlesque.” And in the past week we’ve watched “Shadow and Bone” Season 2, and “Critical Role” Campaign 3 Episode 52. We also saw an early screening of “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and it was incredible, and we’re counting down until we can see it again. We went home and ended up watching “Pitch Black” because David wanted to watch some of the Riddick movies. I guess it was okay.
Let’s see…I also finished “Gilmore Girls” Season 7 and “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” so that re-watch is completely finished. I also finished Season 5 of “Lost Girl,” so that re-watch is over now too. And that led me to starting a re-watch of “Fruits Basket.” I’m obviously still pretty early in Season 1, but I don’t think it’ll take too long to complete the series.
Writing: Well, I have my manuscripts all printed out, and I’m working on reading them again and then scribbling over them for improvements and revising and further expansion and development. I know that doesn’t feel like a lot of tangible progress, but I’m at least making small steps in the right direction. I meant to bring the binder with the manuscripts in it with me for the convention this weekend…but I packed in a hurry because I spent all of yesterday trying to find Luna…so I forgot it. I did bring the notebooks where various notes and ideas are scribbled for the whole series, so I guess I can still work on some stuff. And I have both books saved as Google Docs. I’m debating about printing out at least a few chapters so I can work on them, but…I don’t know.
Other: I’ve played a tiny little bit of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but not much. And that’s about it on the gaming/other front.

Watching: I have been lucky enough to stumble across a funny anime called Bofuri, I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Max Out My Defense. I’m looking forward to continuing this one and Maple is definitely one of my favorite female characters of anime. ‘
Got to watch the new Dungeons and Dragons movie early through Prime. Even just watching the trailers I knew I was going to love it, but I did not expect to love it as much as I did. The whole experience was made even better getting to spend it in a full theater with others who were enjoying it on a similar level.
Playing: I started playing Hades again and have managed to get a good start on it though I have died many times so far already as well. I find the game fun since you are trying to escape the underworld and Hades, who happens to be your dad. On the way through an ever changing maze of rooms fighting monsters while receiving blessings from gods of Olympus doing what they can to help indirectly.
Printing: Started painting some of the D&D 5e themed tokens and I am hoping to get a bunch of them done over the next few days. I got the paints set aside and even a storage box for each kind of token so I am super excited about it.

Well, that is all from us for today. Thank you so much for stopping by, and we’ll be back soon with more geeky content.
