Hey all, Sam here.
In just a couple days, we’ll be on our way back to Ohio, this time to help a friend with Fan Expo Cleveland. I’m sure it’s going to be a great time, and I’m really looking forward to hanging out with some friends…and it’ll actually be cool to be at a convention again. It’s been a few months.
But today and tomorrow I have a bunch of reading and blog prep and some finalizing of 3D printing to accomplish. It’s going to be pretty busy. Oh, and make sure to follow us @SamRushingBooks and @freestateofgeek on Twitter and Instagram, and Free State of Geek on Facebook, for more about our time at Fan Expo Cleveland.
All right, well it is once again Monday, and that means it is time for another entry in the Manga Monday series here on the blog. Each week either myself or David will review one volume of a manga. For the most part I try to focus on a couple series until I get caught up on all of the volumes that I’ve read, so it was a lot of My Hero Academia and The Seven Deadly Sins the past couple of months, but today I’m featuring the first volume of a new-to-us series, and I’m pretty excited to talk about it.
So…let’s get started.

A thrilling fantasy romance between a hero and a priestess–that starts with the hero’s death!
In the final battle with the Demon King, Shibuki performs the ultimate sacrifice, dying to protect his childhood love. His only regret is not confessing before his demise. Luckily for him, it seems God has other plans for this Hero and Saint duo. Shibuki rises from the dead during his own funeral! Shibuki’s new chance at life isn’t all it appears, for it’s no “life” at all. The Demon King laid one last curse on him during their duel, and now Shibuki is undead! To be freed from the grievous curse of undeath, he and his team must hunt down and defeat the Demon Lord once and for all! Again!
My Thoughts
Rating: 4 stars
The concept of this manga definitely intrigued both myself and David. We had seen it last fall and it sounded interesting…but we left the book store without getting it. And then David decided to get a digital copy of the first volume, and he ended up enjoying it. So fast forward a couple months and we managed to be in a different book store, and they just happened to have Volumes 1-5 in stock, so we got them, and I read this one earlier this year.
So far, so good. It wasn’t super action packed or anything, but I feel like I got a good enough idea for the characters and the world, so this first volume set everything up decently enough.
I take up the healer role quite a bit when I play RPG-style games, so having characters who are clerics or priests or whatever generally appeal to me. And I definitely thought it was interesting that this story begins after the hero has died and then been brought back as an undead…which obviously leads to a number of complications….like not being able to touch his childhood love because of the holy power that suffuses her.
So yeah, I enjoy a fantasy romance book that already establishes some complications in the relationship.
This series just might be one of the ones that helps to fill the adventuring party quest vibes I like in stories…although I always crave those sorts of tales.
I’m really curious what is going to happen with the party and with our Hero and Saint duo. Will they find a way to save Shibuki from this curse? Will they be able to defeat the Demon Lord again? I guess I’m going to have to keep reading to find out.
Well, that is all from me for today. Thank you so much for stopping by, and I’ll be back soon with more geeky content.
