Well, I’m almost all caught up on these posts, but I can tell you already that my April book haul is going to be a big one. I have already bought quite a few books, and I have plans to get quite a few more.
Okay, before I jump into this post, I want to acknowledge some book world drama, because it somewhat pertains to this post, specifically to one author whose book is in my book haul…and that is Emily Duncan. If you have missed all of it, Emily and their author friend group have been called out for antisemitic comments, bullying, and more online. I honestly had no idea any of this was going on until the blowup on Twitter last week. I’m sorry if any of my reviews or posts where I recommend Emily’s books have caused harm to anyone out there. I have pulled Emily’s books from my shelves and will no longer be talking about their books here on the blog. I will not be pulling my reviews or recommendations posts BUT I will be going back and editing in a disclaimer at the beginning of the posts. Likewise I have also pulled the books of Christine Lynn Herman from my shelves. The other authors involved in this situation are ones I did not have on my shelves, or else they also would have been removed.
I try to be as open and supportive and welcoming and diverse as I can be here on this blog. Obviously I realize I am human and mistakes can be made and probably have been made before. All I can do is reflect on that and then make changes going forward. I have removed several authors from my bookshelves in the past couple of years because of rude, insensitive, racist, bullying, and other mean behaviors.
I know I’m not on social media all the time, as I have a job and spend time with friends and family and all that, so sometimes I miss things. When I do find out about issues, I try to fix them.
Oh, and please, if I make a mistake or miss something or make a commentary that doesn’t come across well, please feel free to let me know, whether in the comments or via e-mail or my social media accounts. I try and will continue to try and make this a welcoming space where we can talk about books and other geeky hobbies.
Just the single book buying outing, but it was a decently sized one, so there you go. I absolutely loved Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft. I think I read it in one day and it was wonderful, so I totally need to get a review written soon. And I definitely want to try and read The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst soon because it sounds like something my D&D adventure loving heart will really enjoy. I’m partway through both The Conductors by Nicole Glover and The Seventh Raven by David Elliott, and will hopefully finish those and get reviews up soon. I’m probably saving the manga (Delicious in Dungeon Vol 7 and My Hero Academia Team-Up Mission Vol 1) as well as Bridge of Souls by Victoria Schwab for Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon later this month (April 24th). But I also really want to try and pick up We Are the Fire by Sam Taylor soon because it sounds interesting and that cover is awesome. Then there’s Fire Keeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley, which honestly I had not looked into before hearing the hype and then picking it up…so I didn’t realize that it’s not my usual fantasy or sci-fi reads. But it still sounds really interesting, and I try to read outside my preferred genres occasionally, so I’m going to give it a try. Hopefully it lives up to the hype.
I guess now it’s time to unbox that OwlCrate.
The March theme was Of Witches and Wonder. And it took me a little bit to figure out what the book would be for this month, but once I found Sweet and Bitter Magic by Adrienne Tooley, I knew I had to add it to my TBR, so I’m really glad to have it.
Honestly I pretty much loved this entire box. I love having more travel mugs for my drinks and they are especially useful during lengthy reading sessions and/or readathons. Notebooks are also always useful for me. And don’t even get me started on how much I LOVE the bookmark sleeve. It doesn’t quite hold all of my bookmarks, but it does hold all the ones not currently in use–I’ll be honest some bookmarks are in books that I’ve set aside and forgotten about and now I have no idea in which book my bookmarks are hiding…it’s a problem. LOL.
And I think the bookmark for the OwlCrate Reading Challenge with all of the prompts on it is a great idea.
