Hey all, Dani here.
It’s November, which means that it is National Novel Writing Month. My brain focus is definitely on writing instead of reading. So, yeah, this post is going up a couple hours later than my normal post time because I was still trying to think about which book to choose. Instead of thinking about already published novels, I keep thinking about the novel world and characters I’m creating. But more about that in my Weekly Wrap-Up post on Wednesday.
Anyway, it is the first Monday of the Month and that means it is once again time for a Calendar Girls post.
Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was started by Flavia and Melanie, but is now being hosted by Katie and Adrienne. They are all wonderful ladies, and you should check out their lovely blogs. Oh, and if you go to either Katie or Adrienne‘s Calendar Girls post each month, they will have links to all the other wonderful book bloggers participating in this event.
First, more about the Calendar Girls. It is designed to ignite bookish discussions among readers, and was inspired by the 1961 Neil Sedaka song, Calendar Girl.
Just like the song, each month has a different theme. Each blogger picks their favorite book from the theme, and on the first Monday of the month reveals their pick in a Calendar Girls post. Make sure to post back to the hostess’s post, and both Katie and Adrienne will make a master list for the month. The master lists allow everyone to see the other Calendar Girls’ picks and to pop on over to their blogs. Thus, we all get to chat about books and even make some new friends!
Oh, and you don’t have to identify as female to join the Calendar Girls. We welcome readers of all types. So if this sounds like fun for you, join us in all of the fun bookish conversations.
Finally, the November theme is…

Strangest Book You’ve Ever Read
Honestly, I don’t know what to pick for this one. As I mentioned before I’m pretty focused on writing. And what some would consider strange or weird, I might just think of as normal. You know, that happens a lot.
Anyway, so that I can get this post out at a reasonably close to normal time, I’m just going to pick a manga that is weird and strange and kind of interesting. I’ve only read two volumes so far, so I know there is plenty more to be explained and revealed
So this is about a weird alien monster guy who has reportedly destroyed the moon, and plans to destroy the Earth in the same way in a year’s time. Until then he has agreed to teach the class of outsiders, rejects, and misfits, training them to be assassins good enough and strong enough to kill him before he destroys the Earth.
First off, the teacher just looks like a strange guy. He’s dressed a bit formally, but he has many tentacle-like legs/feet.
Plus, the whole plot concept is just odd.
And yet, it is also very interesting. Damian, my fiance, loves the anime series, and has read further into the manga than I have, and while I can’t say that this is a series I plan on completely binge reading anytime soon, but it is one where I will somewhat regularly pick up the next volume, and I do plan to eventually finish the series.
Okay, well I need to get back to writing. That is all from me for today, but I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
This DOES sound odd. Have you read Saga? I admit that was a little too weird for me. And I know that comics and manga aren’t exactly the same thing, but it’s similar.

Yes, I have read Saga. Well, I’ve read like 8 volumes of it. It is weird, but I like it too. I think I have a couple volumes to catch up on now.

Assassination Classroom is a weird one, not my favorite manga by a long shot, but it is interesting enough for me to keep reading.

Sometimes that’s all you need. Something that keeps pulling you back.

My fiance has talked it up enough that I’m curious as to what he sees in it. I’ve discovered that with some manga it takes a few volumes for me to get really hooked, while others grab me at the beginning.

Same here. It definitely varies for me with manga.
