So this is a much different post than what I was originally going to write. I was going to either do a post where I recommended 5 books to Damian and he recommended 5 books to me, or a co-worker suggested that I make a recommendations post for books to buy for the babies/toddlers in your life. But I was scrolling through Twitter a few minutes ago and saw a post from author Jim C. Hines. His wife has been fighting cancer for the last nine months, and according to his post, she passed away yesterday.
Now, I love Jim C. Hines writing, so I figured I would use my post today to talk about his books. If any of this books sound interesting to you, maybe go out and pick up a copy. I know that any book sales that come from this signal boost into the world won’t help tremendously in the current situation, but this is a way I can try and help out someone who is already dealing with a lot.
Okay, let’s talk books.
Princess series
This series basically takes place after the “happily ever after” of the fairy tales. Primarily we follow Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty, though we also encounter a number of others (such as The Little Mermaid and Little Red Riding Hood). Each woman is wonderful and complex, and their stories aren’t all happy. Through oh so many events they form bonds, work together, and more. It’s like fairy tales meets “Charlie’s Angels,” according to the author.
I love this series so so much. It twists so much of what we thought we knew about each of these fairy tales. They are dark and gritty and sometimes horrifying, but the way these ladies come together and fight for better endings is just beautiful. Also, I totally ship Snow and Talia together. Just sayin’.
Magic Ex Libris series
Libriomancers are people gifted with the ability to reach into books and pull out objects from them. This concept intrigued me immediately, because don’t all bookworms fantasize about either going into books or pulling handy things out of them? Well, this series does that and more. There are wonderfully complex and diverse characters within these pages, and to this day it remains one of my favorite series.
I need to re-read these, because I’m pretty sure I don’t have reviews for any of them on this blog.
Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse series
This is his most recent series, and come on, space janitors who end up pretty much having to save the galaxy is just a hilarious and fascinating concept. I’ve only read the first book, but again I love the diversity of characters in this story. Also, the fun and false history of Earth makes this incredibly amusing.
So this one is a bit more fun and light-hearted, and I enjoy it, but I will rave about the first two series far more.
Jig the Goblin
The final series Jim C Hines has is the Jig the Goblin series, and it is the only series I have not read any of the books for. So, while I can’t recommend them personally, I’m still going to just suggest checking them out because they sound pretty interesting. Jig is a nearsighted runt of a goblin who is captured by an adventuring party and forced to guide them on a fantasy quest. So honestly, I don’t know why I haven’t read this series yet. I’m definitely going to pick them up soon.
