Review: Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You

Hey all, Dani here.

I’m just popping in for a quick little backlist review today. Damian and I have a busy sort of date day planned. We are going out to a nice dinner (and then probably going to B&N) before going to the theatre to watch my best friend and the rest of his castmates in a performance of Avenue Q. So it’s going to be a fun time.

And I suppose speaking of my best friend–who will also be my Man of Honor in my wedding next year–today’s book review is for a book that I got for him as a Christmas present, so let’s just jump into the review.

Gmorning Gnight

From the creator and star of Hamilton, with beautiful illustrations by Jonny Sun, comes a book of affirmations to inspire readers at the beginning and end of each day.

Good morning. Do NOT get stuck in the comments section of life today. Make, do, create the things. Let others tussle it out. Vamos!

Before he inspired the world with Hamilton and was catapulted to international fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspiring his Twitter followers with words of encouragement at the beginning and end of each day. He wrote these original sayings, aphorisms, and poetry for himself as much as for others. But as Miranda’s audience grew, these messages took on a life on their own. Now Miranda has gathered the best of his daily greetings into a beautiful collection illustrated by acclaimed artist (and fellow Twitter favorite) Jonny Sun.

Full of comfort and motivation, Gmorning, Gnight! is a touchstone for anyone who needs a quick lift.

My Thoughts

Rating: 5 stars

This book is a collection of a good number of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s morning and evening Tweets, combined with illustrations by Jonny Sun, which are lovely little pieces of art. I have been a follower of Lin’s Twitter for a while now–I think since I became obsessed with Hamilton, honestly. And he does pretty much post a mini motivational pep talk every morning and every evening.

So when asked if he would compile a bunch of them into a book for the copious amount of fans asking for one, he agreed.

Naturally, since this whole book is filled with Twitter posts, it is very quick reading. Granted, you could read one good morning post when you wake up and then read the corresponding good night post before you go to bed and make this book last for a few months. I just devoured it while sitting in the B&N cafe right after I bought the book for my friend.

I like having these little inspirational messages to give a boost up when you need one. Reading these almost makes me feel like Lin is standing in my corner cheering me on as I pursue some of my dreams and goals. And sometimes don’t we just need to feel like we have our own personal cheerleader? I think we do. Okay, fine, I’m a bit spoiled in that I have an on-demand cheerleader because of Damian. But this book will let everyone feel like they have a little bit of that support system, and I think that it is fantastic.

This is definitely a book to keep in a special place for when you need a little pep talk. I very much enjoyed the synergy between each respective set of Gmorning and Gnight pages. If the morning one mentioned putting on your shoes then the evening one mentioned taking them off. They were a little witty, a little funny, and sometimes a little emotional, though I found each and every set of them to be inspirational.

So yeah, I would recommend this little pep talk book. Or if you can’t or don’t want to have a copy of the book, then I guess just follow Lin-Manuel Miranda on Twitter, because then you’ll get new inspiration each and every day.
