Review: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

Hey all, Dani here.

I’m glad that I had the time to prep up the posts for this week in advance, because working ten hours a day and then packing and moving more and more from the apartment to the house is making very little free time to spend on blog work. But things are going well, and I should be able to get back to regular reading, blogging, and writing very soon, which is super exciting.

Oh, and I didn’t mention it before but I am absolutely loving the wall colors we chose. I can’t wait to give you guys the new library tour. It’s going to be great.

All right, let’s jump into today’s review.

City of Ghosts

Summary

Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspecters, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.

When The Inspecters head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

My Thoughts

Rating: 4 stars

This was not my favorite Victoria/V.E. Schwab book, but it was still pretty good, and I was compelled to read it all in one sitting, so it was easy to read and interesting. I can definitely see me continuing with this series.

More specifically with this one, I wanted more depth and more description throughout. Schwab’s writing is still great; I enjoy her writing style. But perhaps because this is a Middle Grade, it did not have the more extensive and immersive descriptions that I tend to enjoy.

However, I can definitely say I loved the book taking place in Scotland. I feel like the atmosphere was fantastic, and apparently the second book will be set in Paris.

So it was a good time and I look forward to seeing what will happen in the next adventure.
