Hey all, Dani here.
Wow…just a few more days left in 2018. I have a few more reviews left for this year, as well as my Underwhelming Reads of 2018 and my Top Ten Reads of 2018 (part two) posts. So there’s still plenty to look forward to from Mousai Books. And I’m already hard at work prepping posts for January, so it’s looking like a lot more posts will be coming in the coming weeks and months, and I am so excited about it.
But for today I have another review to feature for Diverse December, and yet again, it is not a book I read this month, but it is definitely one that I want to share with all of you, so let’s just go ahead and jump into the review.
Summary
While most of the world has drowned beneath the sudden rising waters of a climate apocalypse, Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legend walk the land, but so do monsters.
Maggie Hoskie is a Dinétah monster hunter, a supernaturally gifted killer. When a small town needs help finding a missing girl, Maggie is their last—and best—hope. But what Maggie uncovers about the monster is much larger and more terrifying than anything she could imagine.
Maggie reluctantly enlists the aid of Kai Arviso, an unconventional medicine man, and together they travel to the rez to unravel clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a patchwork world of deteriorating technology.
As Maggie discovers the truth behind the disappearances, she will have to confront her past—if she wants to survive.
Welcome to the Sixth World.
My Thoughts
Rating: 4.5 stars
First off, this is not a light or fluffy book in any way. It is dark and gritty and sometimes filled with gore and violence. But I am not saying that in a bad way. This book will absolutely appeal to fans of the TV show “Supernatural.” It definitely has the same monster hunting feel to it.
And I can also absolutely say that I was dragged into this story fairly quickly. It is a post-apocalyptic setting that I found to be very fascinating, and I loved all the Native American folklore and legends that were infused into the story. There are monsters and there are gods, and seeing how they all interacted with the mortal world was frankly rather entertaining.
Maggie was a cool protagonist, and I like the ties she has to certain other characters, like her former mentor/lover, and of course, Coyote.
This book is definitely a strong series start, and I can definitely say that I have the next book on my to-read list already.
Where to Buy
You can pick up this book from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-million, Book Depository, or your local indie bookstore.
So glad you loved this book! I definitely agree that it has a similar appeal to Supernatural, and think that’s a good rec to make. Personally it was a bit dark for me, but then I tend to like the happy books. 🙂

Yeah, I don’t think I could binge read a lot of books written this way, but for a once or maybe twice a year situation I think I would be okay.
