Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Hey all, Dani here.

I want to start this post by saying thank you to everyone who is following this blog. Yesterday I hit a big milestone by reaching 100 followers. Seriously, thank you all for joining into my discussion of books, bookish things, and other geeky odds & ends.

Today I’m bringing you another book tag. I most recently saw this posted by Sofii at A book. A Thought, so you can find her post here. Of course, this is a tag that has been circulating around for a while, so I’m sure you’ve all seen it somewhere either around book blogs or on BookTube.

Now, I feel like it needs to be said with unpopular opinion posts that just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean that you can’t love it. Not everyone connects with every book and that’s okay. Let’s just respect the fact that we all have our own opinions when it comes to books, and we can still all be book friends.

A Popular Book or Series That You Didn’t Like

Whew, okay, starting off with one that will probably make some readers upset…Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. I read this as part of a book club several years ago and I was annoyed by it starting on the first page, and it didn’t improve much at all over the course of the novel. Now, I will say that lately I have wondered if I just wasn’t in the right mood to read and enjoy the book, so I do plan to give it a second chance. Also, I am really intrigued by Taylor’s newest release, Strange the Dreamer, so we’ll see what happens.

A Popular Book or Series That Everyone Seems to Hate But You Love

So, I don’t think everyone hates this book, but I do feel like you either fall in the “I don’t like it” camp, or you’re with me in the “this book is wonderful” camp. And that is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I just love the atmospheric descriptions of the circus and all of the acts, and I can’t help but be swept away by this story every time. But I get that since it isn’t exactly plot driven or plot heavy that some people find it to be a slow read. I find it to be magical.

A Love Triangle Where the Main Character Ended Up With the Person You Did NOT Want Them To End Up With, OR An OTP That You Don’t Like

Most of the time with love triangles, it is fairly obvious which person the main character will choose. And most of the time I just accept it. But when it comes to the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo, I just don’t really feel like Mal is the best choice. I will always be team Nikolai, though I can also say that I would pick the Darkling over Mal as well. Then again, hey, with Nik not having a romance match, maybe there’s hope for a Nik-centric spin-off.

A Popular Book Genre That You Hardly Reach For

I primarily read fantasy and sci-fi books, though I’ve been known to read contemporary, romance, or historical. I very very rarely reach for mystery/thriller/suspense novels. I’m just not a fan of reading those genres. However, I do enjoy watching those types of movies and TV shows if the premise intrigues me.

A Popular or Beloved Character That You Don’t Like

Bella Swan. There, I said it. Yes I’ve read the whole saga. I just find her to be so lacking in personality. On the other end of things, I read Life and Death and rather enjoyed the gender swapped reimagining of the tale. Beau Swan was a character I liked.

A Popular Author That You Can’t Seem to Get Into

Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I read Beautiful Creatures a few years ago and I liked it but I didn’t love it, and I just didn’t feel the need to continue the series. Maybe if either of the authors came out with a book that sounded interesting to me I’d give them another chance; I’m not someone who just completely gives up on an author because of one underwhelming experience, but for right now I just don’t see myself getting into the fandom.

A Popular Book Trope That You’re Tired of Seeing (ex: “lost princess”, corrupt ruler, love triangle, etc)

As I mentioned before, when it comes to love triangles it is usually blatantly obvious which one the main character will pick, and so I find the whole trope to be unbelievable and frustrating. There have been so few books that have included a love triangle where I like both love interests and it makes the main character’s decision devastating either way because no matter what one of them is going to be rejected. If done well then I actually can enjoy love triangles, but 99% of the time they are just annoying.

A Popular Series That You Have No Interest in Reading

I suppose I answered this yesterday as part of my TBR purge, but the Fallen series by Lauren Kate is one that I’ve realized I have no interest in reading. The first book has sat on my shelves for five or six years now and I really have never been tempted to pick it up. Recently I saw the movie and it just reinforced the fact that I’m just never going to read this.

The Saying Goes “The Book is Always Better Than the Movie” But What Movie or TV Show Adaptation Do You Prefer More Than the Book

This is another question I feel like I’ve answered before, but most of the time yes, I do enjoy the books more. Movies leave out too much and I feel like TV shows manipulate story lines and time lines to try and make the overall story more exciting. But when it comes to iZombie, I feel like the TV series is doing a great job with it all. I read the first volume of the graphic novel compilations and it felt a bit disjointed to me. Yet in the show they upgrade the main character from grave digger in a cemetery to assistant medical examiner, and they allow her to keep her connections to friends and family from before being turned into a zombie. I feel like that all helps the viewer to connect with Liv Moore so much easier and I just adore the show.

Okay, well that’s it for my blog today. If you’d like to do this book tag, then consider yourself TAGGED! And if you do it, I would love to know so I can check out your answers as well.

  1. I love iZombie!! I’ve never read the comics (and don’t really plan to) but the TV show is awesome and one of my favorites. 💞 I still need to watch the latest season, though.
