Review: My Hero Academia: School Briefs, Volume 1 by Anri Yoshi

The world is pretty scary right now, so stay safe out there and be smart. Oh, and help signal boost all the authors and creators out there who have been massively affected by the canceling of events and conventions all over. I’m going to signal boost all I can, so if you know of an author or an artist who could use a little shout-out, seriously, let me know. In the meantime, I’m going to try and keep my blog filled with as much content as I can. I’ll be doing my usual reviews and recommendations and discussions, but whatever signal boost posts I get will be bonus posts. If my reading slows down a little bit because I’m writing and scheduling extra posts, then I am totally happy and willing to spend my time doing that. We all share the same world, so why don’t we help each other live in it, right? That’s how I feel.

Okay, so I finally got around to picking this one up after watching the new movie, “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.” I had held off on reading it because I’m not exactly all that familiar with reading light novels. I know, that seems silly. I love the manga and anime for My Hero Academia, and I read regular novels all the time, so why should light novels be an issue? Honestly, I have no sensible answer for you.

But I read this one, and I read it rather quickly overall, maybe taking an hour, where a manga version of this same story would have taken me probably about half that. Still, I’m familiar with the world and the characters, and this was a really cool glimpse into some day-to-day life that we don’t normally get to see. This was a fun peek into the  activities of both the students and the teachers at UA High, which is nice because we don’t always get to see this sort of thing. Plus I think it really does help to expand the details about some characters we don’t see as often, or it helps expand background situations and conversations that hint towards future events.

Honestly, I think getting to follow the teachers as they sit in the teacher’s lounge and prepare for lessons and parent’s day and all of that was really cool.

And oh man, I really do wish we had gotten to see parent’s day in the anime. It was fun to see how it all got pulled together, and how the students interacted with their parents and others. We got to see Tsuyu’s dad in this story, well, at least we read his description. It isn’t the same as viewing it in the manga.

But overall I just really enjoyed this peek into events that happen in between episodes of the anime. It was pretty darn cool.
