Purging That TBR Pile Take 2

Hey all, Dani here.

I actually found that looking through my Goodreads Want to Read list and weeding out the books I just didn’t see myself getting around to was more beneficial than I could have imagined. So I’m going to try and do a few more of these posts. Actually I’ve now gone through about 300 or so books on my Want to Read list so far and I have removed quite a few of them which is great. But my TBR pile was at over 800, so I can see me needing to have 25-30 of these posts to get all the way through the list.

First up: Abandon by Meg Cabot. I’d like to get around to this one at some point because I like reading books by Meg Cabot, but this isn’t something I’m planning on picking up any time soon so for now I think I can remove it from my want to read list.

Next: The Throne of Fire by Rick Riordan. The only MG/YA books by Rick Riordan I haven’t finished yet are the Kane Chronicles. I absolutely must correct this issue, so this is an easy book to keep.

Okay, then there’s SentSabotaged, and Torn by Margaret Peterson Haddix. I read the first book in this series earlier this year (I think?) and I liked it. I’m curious as to what happens next and I already have a copy of book two, Sent. Plus these are quick reads so I’m going to keep these.

To make this go a little faster than last time, this next list is a number of books I’m just not really interested in right now or I’m so far behind in the series that I would really have to be in the mood for a binge read to catch up, so for now, all of these books will be removed from my TBR. With most of the urban fantasy ones though, I do own a majority of them so if the mood strikes me then I may pick them up in the future. Here’s the list: Heat Rises by Richard Castle, Nightshade by Andrea Cremer, Cat’s Claw and Serpent’s Storm by Amber Benson, Song of Unmaking, Shattered Dance, and House of the Star by Caitlin Brennan, River Marked and Wolfsbane by Patricia Briggs, Overbite by Meg Cabot, Bite Club and Last Breath by Rachel Caine, and Fire by Kristin Cashore.

Wow, the only ones I’m keeping in this section of the list are Clockwork Princess and City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare. I went quite a bit of time after reading the previous books in the series that I told myself I would need a series reread before I could properly finish the books. So I’m slowly working my way through all of the Shadowhunters books.

In Stone’s Clasp by Christie Golden. I loved the first book in this series and I waited and waited for this book to come out. But I guess something happened with the author and/or publisher because both this book and the third one were only released as ebooks and that threw me off because I like matching sets and so I never got around to finishing the series. Maybe someday, but probably not, so I’m saying goodbye to this one.

Also leaving is Flying Changes by Sara Gruen. I really liked her debut novel and wanted to read more by her, but I’m just not feeling like this is a book I want to read now. Perhaps I’ll pick up one of her other books in the future but for now I’ll pass.

Here’s going to be a bit of a mixed bag: Blood Cross and Mercy Blade, and Bloodring, Seraphs, and Host, all by Faith Hunter. Now, I do want to read the Jane Yellowrock books at some point so the first two I’m keeping, but for now I’m going to pass on the other three because I’m just not quite in the mood for them right now. Maybe sometime in the future that will change. We’ll see.

Passion by Lauren Kate. Well, I’ve already talked about not being interested in reading the first book so eliminating the rest of the series from my want to read list seems obvious. Goodbye.

Finally there is Rosemary and Rue and A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire. This is another urban fantasy series that I’ve been meaning to read for a while and just never got around to. I’d like to pick it up at some point since I own 5 or 6 books in the series. For now I’m going to keep the first book on my list as a reminder, but the rest of the series I’m going to remove for now. When I’m in the mood for a book with the fair folk then hopefully I can pick this series up.

Whew, well that’s it for round two of the TBR purge. I only kept like 9 books out of the 30 listed here so that’s a pretty big purge. I’m actually feeling pretty good about it. My list of books to read is still really long. I think this puts me at around 790 or so. There will be more of these posts to come in the future so stay tuned.

  1. I’ve been thinking about doing this myself, but I want sure it would be beneficial. I’m definitely leaning towards doing it now that you found it beneficial!

    1. I just got to feeling overwhelmed when looking at my TBR list of over 800 books. Obviously that is a bit unrealistic, so I’m trying to narrow things down. And I don’t need to have a whole series listed as to-read when I haven’t even read the first book. Purging this list is actually making my life feel a little less cluttered, which is great. I just worry that people are going to be bored with these posts. If I keep going through 30 books with each post it will still take me something like 27 posts to finish my TBR purge.

      1. I am a bit worried about the bored factor as well, but I really need to clean up my TBR. When I first joined, I felt obligated to add all these books I had found on Goodreads lists and it’s clear years later I’m never going to read them. It’s time to create a much more reasonable list. I think I’ll give it ago some Friday and see how it feels. Thanks for your feedback!

      2. I’m trying to space my purge posts out so I’m not doing too many at once. But I’ve also been in a little bit of a reading slump so I don’t have as many review posts ready to go.

      3. Reading slumps are the worst, especially when you have a blog to keep up with. I’ve been struggling with a slump ever since Nica fell ill. But my last book might have just helped pull me out of it. Only time will tell.

      4. I think this slump also comes from the fact that I read something like 20 or so books in July and then 21 books in August. Plus with getting a bigger apartment at the start of the month and trying to deal with cleaning it up and then all the packing and moving and everything, I’m just not finding as much time for reading. I sometimes will read for a few hours at work but lately I’ve just felt so tired that I just watch a whole bunch of YouTube videos instead.

  2. I can completely understand that. While reading is enjoyable and can be relaxing, it’s also sometimes not the best thing for us when we are exhausted. I spent a lot of time not reading much of anything when I was first diagnosed with chronic pain. I simply was too tired to read. Random videos were easier. I wish you all the best with the move. I know it tends to be a bit stressful, even when we’ll planned!

    1. It wasn’t really planned much at all. My boyfriend and I went to talk to his landlady to see about the possibility of a two bedroom apartment. We were thinking maybe if something became available in the next couple months. She had one available right than and there so we just took it. The past two weeks have been a bit chaotic as we try to juggle our schedules with all the moving.

  3. Oh my, I’m impressed everything if going so well as it is. That’s a very short time frame to get ready for a move. I’ve done it, but it’s no fun at all! Good luck!

    1. Thanks. We are mostly moved over, just some odds and ends and then we have to clean up the old apartment a bit. We have the rest of the month to fully move, which is nice.
